Sometimes I am impressed by how sharp/intelligent my youngest brother (Jadon – 8 y/o) is.
Take last night for example. I had just climbed into my bunk-bed (all the boys (Jared, Jadon, and I) share a bedroom), and we got to talking a little bit. Somehow, we got to talking about aliens and the possibility of other life in the universe… (I was going to post a picture of this little pink alien, but it seems that it disappeared
. Anyway, Jared said something about the universe being so big and that it seemed to be (or very well could be) infinitely large, and it was hard to comprehend partly because there wasn’t anything in everyday life that you could relate it to. Then I thought to myself, I know there is something that was infinite that we had “experienced” (kind of hard to explain), but I couldn’t think of it. Jadon then said “Numbers! They go on forever.” So we started talking about numbers and Jadon said something about all the names they had invented for the bigger and bigger numbers (millions, billions, trillions). I mentioned scientific notation and Jared said “Don’t even try to explain that to me” (Math does not happen to be his favorite subject, but it is a favorite of mine, and Jadon is really good at it), so I didn’t, but I thought I’d try to explain exponents to Jadon, and gave several examples with different numbers.
Jadon’s comment – Wow, those numbers get huge so fast!
My reply – Yes, exponentially!
