Today is May the twenty-second. Today is my birthday. Today I discovered something…

I was born on May 22 (1990) which happens to be a special day, in my opinion, for several reasons.

It’s a national holidayUnknown to me until today.

It seems that on May 22, 1819, the steamship The Savannah set sail from Savannah, Georgia on the first successful transoceanic voyage under steam propulsion. And in 1933, Congress designated May 22 as National Maritime Day.

NATIONAL MARITIME DAY MAY 22 ((YEARLY))A joint resolution of Congress designated May 22 as National Maritime Day beginning in 1933.This became so, by:Joint Resolution of Congress Designating May 22 as National Maritime Day passed May 20, 193373d Congress, Session I, 1933 S. J. Res No.7JOINT RESOLUTION Designating May 22 as National Maritime Day.Whereas on May 22, 1819, the steamship The Savannah set sail from Savannah, Georgia, on the first successful transoceanic voyage under steam propulsion, thus making a material contribution to the advancement of ocean transportation: Therefore be it Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That May 22 of each year shall hereafter be designated and known as National Maritime Day, and the President is authorized and requested annually to issue a proclamation calling upon the people of the United States to observe such National Maritime Day by displaying the flag at their homes or other suitable places and Government officials to display the flag on all Government buildings on May 22 of each year.Approved, May 20, 1933

We had the same release date :) - Although, I was version 1.0 or something <grin>.
You see, Microsoft released the third major release of Windows, Windows 3.0 on the same day I was born. Now Windows 3.0 was significant because it became the first widely succesful version of Windows and was a major source of income for Microsoft selling nearly 10 million copies.
And…

Last, but not least. My birthday is the least common birthday.
So. When is your birthday?

We have a Linksys WPS54G wireless printer server at my house, and since I’m running Ubuntu most of the time, I wanted to be able to print from within Ubuntu. So when I finally got around to looking at the printing options built-in to Ubuntu, I was quite suprised at what I found…

What first got me started on configuring my printer were some new pieces of software that I installed, Avant Window Navigator, and Affinity Search. Affinity Search has a nice way of displaying all the control center settings, and they are searchable too (similar to how it is in Mac OS X).

Affinity Search open with Avant Window Navigator at the bottom of my screen.

I was exploring the control panel and saw “Add a printer” under “Common Tasks”. Since I had been wanting to be able to print, I figured I would see what I could do with the built-in software and drivers.

The Control Center – Notice the common tasks on the left

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so that’s what I’m depending on…

Expose like features in Beryl… (see top, left for aditional printer dialog)

What really impressed me was that I didn’t have to install any drivers or anything for the printer, or the print server, and setup took about 2 minutes. In windows, the printer software takes about 10 minutes to install (with a reboot) plus the print server software installation which is another 2 minutes.

Bookmarks. I never used them. Until…

I had never liked having bookmarks in I.E. (older versions of it) because it just wasn’t very feature rich, and I figured I didn’t really need them because I could find whatever I wanted by doing a google search…
To make it short, someone told me about FireFox and I was resistant to try it because I.E. worked just fine for me. I ended up trying it half a year later and liked it much better. Lesson learned – Never quit trying new stuff, you may find a treasure… several months later…
I find out about del.icio.us, a bookmarking website where you can store all of your bookmarks online and tag them etc. etc. I was like “I don’t need this”… But then I finally, around October of last year, I finally decided to give del.icio.us a try. and found that it was helpful and increased my productivity (being able to search other’s bookmarks was great too). del.icio.us was only one of many many many different social bookmarking sites and applying the lesson that I learned earlier, I decided to see if there was anything better than del.icio.us… ma.gnolia.com is now my favorite social bookmarking website and you can import all your bookmarks from del.icio.us to ma.gnolia.com…

my del.icio.us and ma.gnolia username is JordanCronin

Never quit learning!
